Other Side - The Story and the Song

When Tony Roost and I wrote this song, we were feeling into the loss of death. Tony had spoken these words “Will I see you on the other side?” with his mother when she had passed away. She had meant the world to him, and he had always wondered if they would reunite. There was a strong hope and peace that mother and son would reconnect someday on the other side of life. I could not forget him telling me this. In our writing session in Toronto, a beautiful melody came through on the piano and then these words poured out.

We had almost forgotten about this song until years later when my father repeated these same words to my mother and it felt like a sign. When my mother was really sick and her end was near, I overhead my dad say to her, “I will see you on the other side.” I thought this was such a beautiful statement so that my mother wouldn’t be so afraid facing the unknown. She responded to him that he should come soon to be with her. After 60+ years of marriage, I could not believe how sweet their love was for each other. They loved to laugh and share everything. They were even sharing their transition.

Since death is such an unknown, there are more questions, doubts and even fears. For the one facing death there can be a fear of the unknown and a growing sense that the direction is set. As the body shuts down, you see the spirit relent. There is such bravery for the person dying and a knowing that the end is the only through suffering. The person looks to their ancestors, their beliefs, and their loved ones for comfort in their last moments.

As the same time, the pain of loss is so incredible for those left behind you wonder if you will ever recover. Loss and grief cracks you open, and time slows down. You are able to handle very little and you can hardly do the ordinary things. There is a little part of you that is gone, part of your flame of joy and love. You find yourself searching for your loved one or your lost light in every face and in every story. You wonder if you will ever heal from have loved so hard. The gift in loss is that you have time to go inside yourself and face your own divinity.

The other side is the other side of this human life, and an existence beyond the veil. It is the place of uncertainty, unknown, and mystery. The other side is the place discussed in songs, poems, sermons, hospital beds and books. Even without knowing, we offer each other beautiful visions of peace, familiarity, immortality, and freedom. We create stories and beliefs that show the capacity of generosity of a human. We hold each other’s hands as we submit to the unknown.

Will you know my name is a reference to the uniqueness of the soul’s connection to another through a name and the essence of who they are. In this case, a mother named her son and he wondered if she would remember him when they met again across the veil. A husband wondered if his wife would remember him and his name once they met in the light. These powerful questions have opened the hearts of its songwriters and we will forever search for the answer.

Song Medicine

From a more energetic and spiritual perspective, the medicine of this song is about growing one’s vision, intuition, and psychic abilities. The 3rd eye chakra is opening and intuitive gifts are increasing. There are 96 chambers in the 3rd eye and Archangel Raphael, is the great healing angel who resides over this opening chakra. This eye, just like our two eyes, opens and shuts based on whether or not we want to see.

The colour of this song is green, and the crystal is the Amazonite, which has a calming effect on the Central Nervous System. It balances and harmonizes the emotions, feelings of stress and promotes peace. The iris is a flower that brings wisdom, faith, and hope. The burdock root adaptagen removes negative energies and promotes courage, protection, and purification through loss. The willow tree is also part of the song’s wisdom that offers fertility and new life. If you plant a willow branch in the ground a new tree will grow.

The medicine of this song and its focus on the third eye reminds us that opening our psychic abilities, opens us to new ways of seeing. Therapies like EFT taping can help us open our third eye and clear out congestion. The sound therapy of this song is A major and 440 hz which also opens us to our psychic abilities. The sacred geometry is the dodecahedron is the platonic solid for the universes having 12 pentagonal sides suggesting a time in which divine forces need to lead the way when our understanding cannot. It helps increase your vibrational level to attune you to a higher spiritual plane. Aquarius is the star sign for this song as it is about air and transcendence. The affirmation is that “everything happens for a reason.”
